The Invention of the Prining Press

The printing press was invented by a man named Johannes Gutenberg. The first book ever printing was the called the "Diamond Sutra" that was printed in China in 868 CE. The prining press was first made of wood but later on it got changed and was made into a metal. The printing press was developted from a technology of a screw type wine press. The printing press was invented in 1440. The printing press worked by having the ink spread around the surface and hand set of wooden blocks made a print of the paper. The printing press is also known as Guenberg printing press.
Johannes was a German gold smith. Gutenberg was born on 1394 and died on 1468. This invention had a great impact in the world. It allowed printing books to become way easier and quicker. After the printing press was invented the speed of printing books was 10 times the speed before.

Inventions and Inventors

Today in class, we started our new unit. It is called Inventions and Inventors. In class we watched 2 different clips on inventors. We watched one on Benjamin Franklin and the other on Leonardo Da Vinci. We discussed the different qualities of an inventor. We chose a lot of different characteristics. We chose things like being a risk-taker, intelligent, creative, curious, smart and multi-talented. Then later we took a quiz in our planners. It was interesting to see the different ways people are better at learning things then others in different parts. There were things like Verbal/Linguistic, Mathematical/ Logical, Visual/Spatial, Musical/Rhythmic, Physical kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic.
Later on we discussed each of our results, then Namuun and Jill drew on the poster. They drew a car, light bulb, cellphones and etc...
For the areas of interaction we chose Human Ingenutiy and for the IB learner profile we chose risk-taker.

Criteria E- Evaluate

Evaluation- Criteria E
This project was an overall fun assignment. It was all confusing and sometimes hard but it was fun when it came to the creating part. The project was a success it went the way I wanted to. It wasn’t 100 percent good or nice but it was more than the half I was expecting.
The project I had been working on was the fence. I had come to the conclusion of changing the common, Mongolian, ger district fence because it came to me that it was the most important part. The fence that I had designed was fairly good but it was slightly different than what I had on paper. If only I had used more clay and super glue the toothpicks might have made a better role at being a fence. I had only used clay which made the toothpicks all wobbly and unstable. It seems that an ice-cream stick would have been better than a toothpick. Since the toothpick was too small and tiny, I ended up using more than I expected and ended up being all wobbly and weak.
The fence is an important part of the ger district, since it allows the people to claim land and also to mark their territory. Also the fence is an important part because it allows privacy and un-welcomed animals and people from invading. The fence keeps out stranger and also reduces or even prevents theft. During the winter time when they need a refrigerator they tend to use the ger top as one, they place it on the top and since it’s cold it prevents it from melting. If there isn’t a fence during times like this it is obvious that the things placed on the ger tops will end up being stolen. With this in mind, it proves that a fence is essential.
The fence I had designed and built could have been better. It could have been better by being much stable and much stronger. I could have also used my times wisely. For the investigation I remember having to type the whole thing because I forgot to save it on my flash also for plan I remember doing it very quickly. I had enjoyed working on the investigation becuase I had a lot to talk. Although I had it done, I just wish that I had done it more carefully. For Criteria D create I had pushed back the dates that I was supposed to work on the fence. I was supposed to start on the 15th but ended up starting on the 16th. If only I had used my time wisely I could have done a better job. The equipments I used were simple and easy to get. All I needed were clay, toothpicks and tape. Although the tape didn’t do much it was still helpful. The techniques I used were holding 4 toothpicks at a time and placing in on the clay. It made the whole process quicker but it made the line not straight.
The changes in my plan were that I didn’t use glue and bond, also that I started 1 day later than I was supposed to.
The resources I needed were easy to get. They were easy to purchase but not easy to make. Once I had bought the clay I had to smudge it and keep touching it until it got soft and warm. It was hard dealing with hard, cold clay. It didn’t go the way I wanted it to. Overall the project was easier than I had expected also it was fun.

Test- Criteria D

The changes in the Test
Criteria D

Well, I originally had a test that was 2 weeks long but while writing it I also thought of how this might not work. So, later when I posted it, Ms. Wilson said it might not be too realistic so, I decided to design a new test. A test that is simple and accurate.
The test I’m going to be designing now will be a test. The test will be testing how well the fence is built and how stable or not stable it is. The test is going to be a simple process. There are going to be at least 5 people who will be asked to do the test. They will be given a sheet of paper and a pen or a pencil. They are going to have 2 different columns and with lists of yes’s and no’s. These 5 people are going to check, whichever box depending on weather the fence has the things on the list or not. There will be 2 different kinds of fences. The first fence will be the one that normal Ger district people use and the other will be the one that I designed. The test will only take 30 to 40minutes.
The 5 people will start with the first fence which is the normal and usual fence that the Ger people use. They will be going around and will be checking the fence and will make notes as they go. Also check the boxes on weather the fence have it or not. Then they will go to the second fence and do the exact same thing.
This is the lists of the check-list:
1. Does it have gaps between each wood?
2. Is the fence tall enough?
3. Is the fence stable and not wobbly?
4. Is there anything under the gate/ the whole fence?
5. Are there any windows? Are they necessary?
6. Is the door easily opened? Is the lock safe? (Ask Rebekah for more detail of the lock)

Tsolmon:
Rebekah’s Fence
1. No, there are no gaps between each toothpick
2. Yes, 2.5 meters is tall enough for a fence.
3. Some parts are more wobbly than the others but most of them are stable and decent.
4. Clay- representing wood in ‘real life’.
5. Yes there is a window. It is necessary in order to protect from uninvited strangers.
6. No, the door falls apart the moment you pull it open. But Rebekah says that in real life, the door will be more stable and it won’t fall apart.
7. (there are flowers inside)

Fences in General
1. Some families could not afford to have a decent fence so they built their gates out of scraps and whatever they could find in the dumpsters. So, there some gaps and space areas between the fences.
2. Most of the fences in the ger districts are tall because they need the fences to be tall in order to protect themselves from robbery and for their own safety, since robbery is very common amongst people are financially poor.
3. Because they can’t find decent materials to make the fence, and since they have to build it out of scraps, the fences are not fairly decent and they are not stable most of the time.
4. No, they basically dig a hole and stick the fences in.
5. No, there are no windows in the gates of the ‘ger districters’ because they barely have enough materials to build the gate itself, they cannot afford to also put a window.
6. Doors are stable. However, they are not held on by hinges, but instead, wheel tars.

Aiste
Do you think the fence is strong enough if it was built with real wood?
Yes, if they’re all fastened well together and yes it looks strong enough.

Do you think the fence is affordable?
It really depends on what kind of wood but yes it does look affordable.

If you were to change something about this fence what would it be?
I would make it sturdier.

Do you think metal or wood is better to make this kind of fence?
In my opinion wood affordable, easy and faster to set together.

Do you realize the differences between a normal fence and this fence?
No, not really but there are some slight differences.

Process for criterion C- Create

1. What steps did you take to make your product, from beginning to end?
The whole project took me 2 days. I did not really follow my plan, but I still got it done. J The steps I took in order to make the fence were simple the first step was to:
1. Get the materials first.
2. Make the clay soft in order to make a fence.
3. Then I cut the cardboard and got started on the fence project
4. Later, I stuck and spread the clay all over the cardboard and began sticking the toothpicks into the clay.
5. Then I kept sticking all of the toothpicks until the end and later, made a gate with a different kind of toothpicks.
6. At last I made a simple window and made a hole in the door that was made of clay and stuck a piece string through it.
7. Then voila I was finished J

2. What went well?
I’d have to say the whole project went well. It was simple but it was hard dealing with the clay because it was very delicate when it got too warm and sticky. Another thing that went well would be that I had the materials and that I was ready to start.

3. What went wrong and how did you fix it?
A lot of things went wrong. The toothpicks were not very well-placed and the clay did not stick very well to the cardboard. I fixed this problem by doing it all over again and also by using some tape. Also another problem was that the door kept falling off. I fixed this problem by adding more clay.

4. If you had it to do over again, what would you do?
I would make it bigger and spend more time and also use my time wisely. If I were to do it again then I would also make the gate a bit more like a gate instead of just some sticks.

Changes for Criterion C- Create

Changes:
1. Did not make a dog door
2. Did not make a clear window with metal wires attaching them each other
3. Did not make a design of a pencil for the corner of the fences
4. I did not start on the November 13 I started on the 14th
5. Did not use the following equipments:
· Knife
· Bond
· Glue
· Dirt
· Metal
6. Did not make a simple sketch of the fence

Final design

For my project i have decided to enhance and modify the fence along with the door. In my design specifictations i said that i will make my fence very tall so that people cannot climb over it and so that people can't see what's inside. Also i have said that i will have no gaps or spaces between each fence, which i have done for my final fence design. Also in the design specifications i have said that the fence should be able to keep out stray dogs and cats/ rats and etc... So the new idea i came up with was that i was going to put another piece of wood along the ground and the wood itself blocking and covering every single whole. Also i said that the fence is going to be strong and stable. Which that my new fence is going to be really thick about 8cm's thick. Also the last one was that it is going to be made of wood, which it is.
The height of the fence will be 2 meters and a half.
The length will be 10 cm's

I have also added the window which is a half circle. It is made out of metal bars and is really strong. Also there is a metal cap. Which allows you to close the window whenever yoy want to.
There is also a animal door. It is a plastic flap but at night or whenever you can lock it from the inside.
The door is very simple it is made of wood and metal. The door is attached to the fence and is actually part of the fence and is off the ground. So that it wont't sink later.

I have chosen this design becuase it is cheap and good. Also it is sustainable and very useful. I have done 3 designs and decided to combine all of them. I just took bits and pieces from all of them and just combined them all together and came up with my final design.

The ger district Criterian A

We the 9th grade class has been working on a project on how to help the Ger district. The problems were that the people who live in the Ger district had problems with money, which is poverty. Either they don’t have a job or they don’t have enough money to support the whole family. The project is that we have to be designing/ talking about a specific thing we want to improve and enhance in the Ger district. Also something that we want to change in the Ger districts technology. I had chosen to build and modify the fence. The fence is an important role in the Ger district. The fence right now that they use in the Ger districts has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages would be that it allows the owner to claim its land and also it keeps out the unwelcomed visitors and it reduces theft. The disadvantages would be that it is not very stable and not strong enough. If it is made out of metal and wood that some people are already using then its fine, but some people just make it out of trash. They just patch things all up. The fence is the thing that allows things to be private. Without the fence you would have not such thing as private or private property. So the problem here is that the fences are not strong and is not long lasting. By solving or helping to solve the problem the Ger districts lives would be much better. If the problem of poverty and the fence and all sorts of things are solved then it would change the lives of the people who live in the Ger districts greatly. First it would keep them safe and also allow the whole family to eat plentifully. Also make their lives of carrying the water back and forth much easier and more comfortable.
The people who gave us information were Mrs. Wilson who showed us the power point and helped us build the fence and gave us information during the field trip. The second person was Mr. Chilton who showed us another power point and gave us more necessary information. The third person was Mr. Tvdrik who helped us build the fence and dig the toilet. He also explained the community center that was going to be built soon. Also he gave us more information on fences and other families. The last person was Sukhee. He was the guide for us the entire trip. He gave us a whole lot of information. He had talked about the water system and the community and center. He also talked about the 35 families that were getting help from the center and the Rinky Dink travel. Also he talked about the mud slides and the margins and the cost of the wood, coal, electricity and etc…
As mentioned earlier I wanted to modify the fence. I want to make it out of wood that is tall enough to cover the Ger and to protect what’s inside. Also I want to make a fence that has no holes or gaps in the middle. Also to have a strong and stable fence, so that it won’t break. I want it to have two doors. One of the entrance for the car and the other for the people. The test would be that there is going to be two different kinds of fences next to each other and there is going to be 2 people for each fence. One of the fence is going to be the one that I just talked about and the other one is going to be the on they use right now. The 2 people will live inside the fence for a week or two. Then after the 4 people are going to switch the fences and live in it for another weed or two. Then lastly at the end I am going to ask which one was a better fence why or why not and how was it more comfortable. Did you feel safer in the 1st fence or the 2nd fence?
From the field trip I saw a lot of fences and gates with a lot of patched up materials and it was a good idea but it wasn’t as good as it would be if it was made out of wood and metal. The Ger district we visited was called “Bayanzurkh” and it was a fair living. People had money to buy water and buy wood and coal to burn.
This project that we are working on is based on the Ger district in Mongolia. It’s a small Ger district/ town with a population of 7500. The people who live here live fairly well. They have enough money to buy their own food and water. Also enough money to buy coal and wood to lit up their stove during the winter times.
Mongolia’s winter in my opinion is the worst of the worst. It is completely freezing cold if you’re outside and it is completely white. The hill, building and houses are all covered with bits of snow. The country-side is even far whiter, if there’s such word. Since the country-side is a flat land the snow covers every single bit. The brown grass is covered with snow and the roads are too. If you look west, east, south there is no difference all you would see is white and all you feel is the cold air and your half sunken feet.
The country-side snows and it is stacks up high enough to cover the half of an adults feet. Even though you wear clothes you would still feel cold and your hands and cheeks would be red and cold. No matter how much you burn during the winter inside the Ger, you still would feel the cold wind and the wind blowing from the outside. During the winter time the coal and the wood would be used more which then the money spent on the wood and coal would double up or even triple up. No matter how much or how well you cover the Ger with layers and layers of sheets the wind will basically come through the sheets or the tiny holes between them.
Since because of the cold freezing winter there are more people who are likely to freeze outside rather than dying of hunger. Without a fence random people who are freezing is likely to just come into the Ger while no one’s there and also may use the outhouse. The fence in my opinion is the most important part. First without a fence there is no protection and the percentage of stealing and getting things gone is incredibly higher than with a fence. The fence is what protects what’s inside it and protects who’s inside it as well. Also it shows the persons territory and also allows the person to claim the land. In basic and in simple words a fence is what protects the things inside and also makes things private. Without a fence it makes things public and with a fence it keeps things private. Privacy seems to be big in this class and also too many people out there so if you actually want privacy then you need fences.
We are doing this project to actually come up with an idea to help the lives of Bayanzurkh better. Although it’s just an idea and a thought it may help and it may play a really big part in their lives. Also, a fence is important in order to keep the wild animals away. Especially if you’re in the country-side it is really helpful and useful to have a fence in order to keep the wild animals away. The winter times as mentioned in my opinion are the most dangerous because if the animals are hungry they will come down and if you don’t have a fence it will be dangerous. A fence may save a persons life and keep things safe and private. Also without a fence you cannot claim land as it was several times mentioned. Without a fence in the Mongolian law you cannot say your land is your land.
From this unit I have learned a lot. Although I have lived here all my life I have never really took part in any ger district activities and didn’t even think about them. Now, through the field trip I have learned a lot and I’m proud and it seems to be really useful. I can prove that I have learned a lot by the speed and amount of things I am writing and the amount of things I want to write MORE. The field trip has really made me think twice about money and how I should conserve and re-use things. People are like this as someone said “You don’t know how precious something is unless it leaves you and you don’t know how valuable something is unless it disappears.” This saying is strong and important and people should always remember it. Although some people are not happy or satisfied by their life but if you think about the life of a person in the Ger district you may want to think twice and think about how well you live and about how satisfied you have to be.
There were several technologies I saw, things like fences with patched up metals, clothes and tires. I also saw stairs that was made out of tires for recycling. These seemed really interesting to me because I would have never thought of doing things like that. The conditions of these fences were not so good but they were still helpful. They may not be the best fence but it still did cover all the spots and they didn’t even have to pay for them. For them it’s an advantage because then they don’t have to spend their money and instead they can use it for something else. The fences and the gates and the Gers could have been better designed but they were still in good shape and were still useful. The outhouse is another kind of technology it is a simple toilet that is located outside. It is a simple basic toilet that is about 2 meters deep and some wood on the top and it was all that. The toilet is really stinky and it smells because there is no such thing as a flush. There is nothing special it is just a hole and nothing else. If I was to make this better first I would just change it into a really good and non stinky bathroom. Also I would somehow make it cleaner and make it something that a person from the city can use.
The second field trip to the half way done community center was also interesting. It wasn’t that much. There weren’t a lot of things. I saw several Gers and fences. I saw a ton of graves. It was kind of creepy because imagining living there was a bit creepy. We didn’t really have enough time to look around but I got a basic idea of that area. Although we didn’t do much except to look at the community center I knew that one day this area was also going to grow fairly quickly.
Overall the field trip was really nice and the people were really friendly too. I really enjoyed this field trip. Personally I think it was great. Although it was hard and cold I learned a lot and I did something to help them which made my life in Mongolia more special.

Cyberspace?

What could it be, what does it do? Well, a cyberspace is another word for an information highway also known as internet. A cyberspace is a sense of social communication through the internet. Cyberspace is what allows us to communicate and transport all sorts of things, such as graphics, messages, mail, etc… through the computer. Basically it is a computer system that is better advanced. What I think cyberspace is, it is a network that we can learn, study about all the different things. It is usually to do with computer, technology and internet. The adjectives that come up to my mind are like quick, simple but confusing, frustrating but interesting, familiar, easy, cool, fun and full of information.
20 years ago, I don’t think cyberspace even existed. Cyberspace was invented in the early 1982 in a fiction story by William Gibson. So 20 years ago I think cyberspace wasn’t invented but the idea of it was brought up by many people. It was just a dream or goal that needed to be reached for them 20 years ago. 2o years ago means the 1989 which means after the idea of it was brought up, after 7 years they might have tried to make it but may not have succeeded.
Today, the year of 2009 cyberspace is just another source. It may have been the hardest thing to invent during the 1989 but now it is one of the easiest. Technology is being improved and enhanced day by day. So, the goal now may have changed. Well, still now it is kind of very new but 20 years from now it would be just a useless network. 20 years from now, the technology will be way better. 20 years from now the word cyberspace may not even exist. The saying of, as time flies the things of fame also fades by.
